This has been an important week for Swindon, with several developments that underline both our momentum and our growing regional influence. The Government’s latest devolution announcements mark another step toward the powers and voice we need, and I’m pleased that discussions continue positively around our ambition to be part of a future Mayoral Strategic Authority. This is about ensuring Swindon has a seat at the table when major decisions on transport, economic development and investment are made and about unlocking the benefits that stronger regional partnerships can bring.

Alongside this, the release of the Government’s new spatial planning map placing Swindon firmly within the Thames Valley economic area reinforces what many residents and businesses already understand: our town sits at the heart of a dynamic, high‑growth corridor. This recognition strengthens our case for investment and supports the work we’re doing with partners across the region to secure the right infrastructure, jobs and opportunities for local people.

Transport remains central to that mission, and I was encouraged to receive a positive response from Rail Minister Lord Hendy responding to our Council motion and confirming that the Government supports direct rail services between Swindon and Oxford and that he has asked Great Western Railway to progress plans for a regular weekday service. He recognised the success of the Saturday trial, the strong interest from local stakeholders in seeing this connection delivered and Swindon’s position in the Thames Valley Region. This is a tangible sign that our lobbying is really paying off and that Swindon’s voice is being heard nationally.

Economic confidence in the town continues to grow, too. It builds on our town’s long history in manufacturing and reflects the confidence that global companies have in Swindon’s workforce, connectivity and potential. The Financial Times wrote about us this week saying that we are becoming a defence tech cluster and harnessing our industrial past. It was great to see comments about how Swindon is really being transformed and how our efforts as a Council to bring back our Inward Investment team and transform the planning process, cutting out the delays and red tape, are really helping us deliver jobs and growth.

Taken together, these developments show a town moving with energy and purpose. Our partnerships across the region are strengthening, our calls for better transport links are being acted on, major employers are choosing Swindon for the next generation of high‑skilled industries, and national commentators are recognising our growth and ambition. As Leader of the Council, I am determined that we continue building on this momentum—championing Swindon, pushing for the powers and investment we need, and making sure that progress is felt in every community across the borough.
